It’s hard enough trusting the people we see, touch and feel. Often, the real
test is being able to trust the One we do not see.
Picture this: you are blindfolded and have someone leading you through
Kampala’s crazy traffic for a kilometer stretch, maybe in that downtown kavuyo. You’re relying entirely on this persons lead,
trusting them completely to get you through to wherever you’re headed; safe -
no scratch, no bumps, no accident.
Whenever I try to imagine this kind of scenario my heart kinda starts to race. I envisage and can almost
hear all the sounds; rushing cars, bodabodas,
bicycles and trucks, footsteps, sounds from buildings….hammering, drilling and
falling particles…sounds of the outrageous hooting and all kind of talk from
the various people in the area, squealing tyres, screams, gasps name it.
I try to picture myself listening to the leading of the person who holds my
hand as they instruct me on where to place my feet, when to turn, when to walk
fast, when to go slow, when to leap and when to stay still. I then see myself
in a panic because much as I somewhat trust the person leading me, my ears are
tuned to all that is around me – the sounds and I can’t help but imagine the
worst happening or something going wrong coz for
heaven’s sake I can’t see!
I know he/she holds my hand, and has functioning eyes and knows what they are
doing but the things around, the disturbing sounds I hear just have a way of
mentally nullifying those important facts.
Trying to picture myself peaceful and wearing nothing but a broad smile in this
kind of situation is quite ridiculous but that’s what it ought to be, no? Coz
coming to think of it, being hesitant to move when the person leading pulls at
your hand to move or asking them things like “Are you sure? I hear a vehicle
coming...” is a depiction of a lack of trust and confidence in this person.
Trusting God is a bit like that. It takes faith; for we do not walk by sight.
It takes allowing to be blind so He can see for us, as we use our ears.
Accepting to let Him take us by the hand and lead us safely to the other side.
A lot of times the circumstances, situations and other factors around us seem
to be screaming so many impossibilities, so many failures, dead ends and other
negative things, but we’ve got to trust. Trust in Him who says he knew you
before you were born, in Him who has inscribed you on the palms of His hand, in
Him who withholds no good gift, in Him who does exceedingly abundantly above
all you’d ever ask or imagine, in Him our strength and fortress, in Him who
numbers our days, in Him who knows beginning from end, in Him who is faithful,
who speaks better things, Him through whom we can do all things.
(I could go on and on).
It can be difficult entrusting our all to God, to commit into safekeeping all
our hopes, dreams and desires, to in confidence allow Him take care of
e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g and not ask “Are you sure about this?” because with that
comes awkward surprises, a heart on its toes, the dread of the unknown etc…
but even so, as we start this week, let’s get blindfolded, grasp God’s hand,
block out all the noise and allow Him lead. Put on that smile, hold your head
high, get that bounce on and say ‘God, I know you’ve gat this, lets walk even further…a kilometer is
too short.”
#seeingwithourears…faith!
